One of our main aims in the Science Faculty at Balerno Community High School is to get pupils excited and inquisitive about science from a young age. Primary 7 pupils visit the Faculty during the Induction Days in June and get a taste of being a High School pupil in Science. However over the last four years we have extended this experience to younger primary pupils. Our staff worked closely with our colleagues in our cluster primary schools, Ratho, Kirknewton and Dean Park Primary Schools, and together organised this additional Science event for younger pupils.
Pupils from P3 and P6 were invited to visit the Science Faculty under the guidance of our S2 students. Science experiments were carefully chosen to appeal to all the age groups involved with the emphasis on exciting and informative results. Experiments included props such as Fizzy Rockets, Jelly Worms, Crazy Custard and Whooshing Bottles! The primary pupils logged their learning by drawing diagrams of the experiment and recording results in their learning logs. The pupils from P3 and P6 were engaged fully with every experiment and were a credit to their respective schools and all involved had a great time. The feedback from all the pupils involved was extremely positive.
We were very proud of our S2 pupils whose supervised their younger students carefully and showed great warmth and maturity throughout the whole event. These events have proved to be a great success and we eagerly await next year’s visit.
