National Apprenticeship Week activities

IBM are offering young people the opportunity to find out more about who IBM are and what a career with them looks like. Taking place on Monday 6th March from 1.30pm-4pm at their offices in Edinburgh, topics covered include:

o   100 years of IBM

o   Journey to an apprenticeship

o   Programming workshop

o   CV writing

St Marys Cathedral are keen to showcase Stonemasonry as a career for S3-S6 females. Wednesday 8th March from 10am-2pm, S3-S6 females will have the opportunity to:

o   Learn the art of letter carving

o   Use the various tools used in stonemasonry

Arnold Clark/GTG invite young people to attend their training facility in Edinburgh on Thursday 9th March to promote the MA opportunities on offer. Aims of the session are:

o    Give young people an insight into careers in mechanics, vehicle body repair, vehicle spray paint, vehicle parts, business administration and customer service.

o   Meet current apprentices and speak with various companies that employ apprentices and find out more about what they have to offer

o   Receive a tour of the facilities

Aberdeen Asset Management have offered an evening event targeted at guidance teachers, careers advisors and parents (although young people are also very welcome) on Thursday 9th March between 5pm and 8pm in Edinburgh.

o   A number of employers will be in attendance to promote the apprenticeship/intern/graduate opportunities on offer

o   The audience will learn more about progression routes available and different qualifications that can be achieved.

o   Q&A session and networking opportunity with the employers

Other opportunities

CPD opportunity for CDT and Art and Design teachers. In partnership with Whitespace Design and Edinburgh College a 1 day, FREE CPD workshop is on offer on Friday 12th May from 9am-3pm.

o   Hear from two Senior Creatives at Whitespace, discussing  career paths, insights into design briefs and a site tour

o   Work on a project brief with industry and students

o   Taxis will take you to Edinburgh College, have lunch, a tour of the Art and Design Studios

Street League are offering a shortened version of their Academy programme for young people in S4-S6. This programme incorporates sports, physical exercise with employability and personal development. This workshop is delivered over 4-6 weeks and requires commitment of 1 double period per week. This would be an ideal opportunity for young people identified as Summer leavers.

Edinburgh Tool Library (Social Enterprise); have posted a site visit and entrepreneurial chat with Chris the Director of the company. Keen to share personal experience and insight and raise awareness about business acumen, entrepreneurial spirit and the ethos of the Edinburgh Tool Library Chris is offering this for S1-S3 and S4-S6.

RRSA Level 1 Award – We are looking to establish a pupil steering group to drive forward some of the core priorities foe the school relating to our RRSA Level 1 award. This will be a short life working group and look to take forward the key issues that are most important for us a school. If you would like to know more information or like to be part of this group please come and see either Mr Russell or Ms Simpson.

Balerno goes to the cinema: Balerno Village Screen is hosting a free screening of 80’s classic ‘The Breakfast Club’ for S4/5/6. Tickets are free (though we’d like to take donations for Jak’s Den at the door) but limited. A group of pupils will be coming around PSP classes over the next few weeks if you’d like to get one. The film is on Friday 24th February, St Joseph’s Hall, 7.30-9.30pm.
