S4 Pupils: Please arrive to your exams 5 minutes before they start time so you can check your seat number on the lists outside the Drama Studio.  Remember if the exam finishes 10 minutes or more before the end of a period you should return to class.  Good luck!

Hockey club – The hockey club are organising a trip this Friday 30th Nov to Glasgow. We are going to watch two international hockey matches at the National Hockey Centre. We are going to support a former and current pupil at Balerno! We are leaving by bus at 4pm on Friday evening and will return around 10pm. We have booked a 70 seater bus and only have 13 spaces left. If you would like to book a seat or want more details please see Mrs Duncan in the PE base by Wed 28th.

S2 SKI TRIP JANAURY 2019 – All S2 pupils going on the January 2019 ski trip must attend a meeting in Mr Cheyne’s room (G11) on Tuesday 27th November at 1.30pm.  It is important that everyone attends.

S1 PUPILS ONLY:  SKI TRIP JANUARY 2020 – If you are keen to go on a school ski trip to France or Italy in January 2020 please collect an information letter from Mr Cheyne (G11). Attached to the letter is a return slip which must be returned to the school office by Wednesday 28th November if you wish to go on this trip.

The Trading Standards Office are looking  for volunteers 15-16 years to trains as Test Purchase Assistants with a view to offering paid work when they are 16 years old. This would not be a regular weekly commitment, which means you could more easily fit it in around all the other things you already do. Work Experience Opportunity – Balfour Beatty have been contracted to deliver the refurbishment of North Bridge in Central Edinburgh.  As the lead contractor, they have identified an opportunity for a young person who is either Under 16 or still in FT Education.  Due to the nature of the work and the phases they need to undertake to refurbish the bridge, unfortunately opportunities on the actual site are limited however there is a wide range of opportunity in the back office working alongside the architect’s team, civil engineers and administration. Balfour Beatty are particularly keen to recruit someone with an interest in Engineering or looking at Engineering as a career path following school.  This opportunity is for 1 week and timing is flexible.  If you are interested, please see Mr Ferguson in the Guidance Base.

Responsibilities and tasks

– Developing commercial awareness, communication, team-work, and technical skills as you undertake structured placements across Audit, Tax, Consulting and Deal Advisory.

– Getting involved in a wide range of projects, embracing new ideas and approaches, and seeking out new responsibilities.

– Gaining an understanding of KPMG’s values and demonstrating behaviours that inspire the trust and confidence of team members.

– You will take on tasks that directly add value to our clients and our business. The specific work you do will vary from placement to placement, but could include:

– Working as part of an audit team and completing tasks such as controls testing, bank reconciliations and checking the accuracy of financial statements. Working with our tax, pensions and legal teams and completing tasks such as liaising with HMRC, drafting correspondence to clients and completing tax returns.

– Providing valuable support to client facing teams in advisory helping clients to enhance their business performance – projects are varied and could include anything from supporting clients to manage risk to helping to develop their people strategy.

– Research tasks and contributing to business development activity.

– General support to project teams, including taking minutes at meetings, preparing engagement letters and billing.
