Volunteering is active citizenship, where you choose to get involved, to take on roles and responsibilities to make a difference. Whether engaging in a campaign to clean up a street or local park, to signing a petition, befriending, or helping out in a local charity shop.
Volunteering is about putting democratic values, skills and experience into action.
During #iwill week we will be shining a light on the impact that young people are having, and this is a great opportunity to find-out more.
Volunteering is a simple enough word with a big impact. It’s not just the difference that it makes to people’s lives and our city, it’s also about the difference it can make to you. It can give you confidence and skills that help you when you are looking for work or further education and it is proven to improve health and wellbeing. You get the chance to do things that you never thought you would, make new friends, enjoy yourself and all the time knowing that what you are doing is genuinely changing the world. You can even get official recognition and awards for volunteering through Saltire Awards and we can tell you how.
You might not know what you can do or even what you want to do, but that’s ok that’s where we can help.
We are based at 222 Leith Walk and everyone is welcome to come in for a chat. It’s relaxed, friendly and we would love to see you. We can give information and advice and support if you feel you would like that. You can also get loads of information on our website www.volunteeredinburgh.org.uk
However you choose to get in touch we would like to help you become one of the many people making Edinburgh what it is.

Last term was a busy one and it was great to see our S1 out enjoying the S1 residential at three different centres, our S4 out doing their work experience and the Duke of Edinburgh group working on their outdoor skills at Lochgoilhead centre.
I am also pleased to share that we have been awarded the Sport Scotland Silver award for physical activity. A huge congratulations to all the staff, parents, coaches and helpers that made this possible.

P7 Open Evening – 26th September
We are delighted to invite P7 parents to our open evening on Tuesday 26th September from 6pm. The purpose of the evening is to give you an opportunity to see round the school, talk to teachers and pupils and see some of the resources which are used in the various subject departments. You may also get to experience some of the activities pupils will undertake in lessons!
The evening will begin with refreshments in the drama studio and the opportunity to meet other parents. Head Teacher, Mr. Neil McCallum, will then provide an introduction to the school before our senior pupils take you on group tours of the subject departments. At the end of the tour your guides will bring you back to the Drama Studio where you will meet the Senior Management Team and have the opportunity to ask questions while your children meet the Pupil Support team.
Precise timings for the evening are as follows:
6pm Refreshments in the Drama Studio
6.30pm Head Teacher’s Welcome and Introduction to Balerno High School
6.45pm Tour of departments
8.15pm Questions and Close
We anticipate a very full and busy evening and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.
