Volunteering is active citizenship, where you choose to get involved, to take on roles and responsibilities to make a difference.  Whether engaging in a campaign to clean up a street or local park, to signing a petition, befriending, or helping out in a local charity shop.

Volunteering is about putting democratic values, skills and experience into action.

During #iwill week we will be shining a light on the impact that young people are having, and this is a great opportunity to find-out more.

Volunteering is a simple enough word with a big impact.  It’s not just the difference that it makes to people’s lives and our city, it’s also about the difference it can make to you.  It can give you confidence and skills that help you when you are looking for work or further education and it is proven to improve health and wellbeing.  You get the chance to do things that you never thought you would, make new friends, enjoy yourself and all the time knowing that what you are doing is genuinely changing the world.  You can even get official recognition and awards for volunteering through Saltire Awards and we can tell you how.

You might not know what you can do or even what you want to do, but that’s ok that’s where we can help.

We are based at 222 Leith Walk and everyone is welcome to come in for a chat. It’s relaxed, friendly and we would love to see you.  We can give information and advice and support if you feel you would like that.  You can also get loads of information on our website www.volunteeredinburgh.org.uk

However you choose to get in touch we would like to help you become one of the many people making Edinburgh what it is.

1C1 Charity Bake Sale

Following on from 1C2’s charity bake sale last week, which raised a lot of money for charity. 1C1 will host a bake sale in the concourse at break time on Friday 18th December. Come along and by some delicious sweet treats and help us raise even more money for the school charity, Teenage Cancer Trust.

Christmas Concert

On Tuesday night the gathered audience witnessed another tremendously successful music department Christmas concert. As usual this high calibre event could not happen without the dedication of the musicians, singers, teachers, and instructors to an exhausting rehearsal schedule at such a busy time of year. Thanks also to the HFTT department (providing much needed refreshments), the St. Mungo’s technical crew and the janitorial staff.

Christmas Candy Canes

In the run up to Christmas the Cockburn house team are organising a secret Santa candy cane event. You can buy one to give to someone for 50p, and for an extra 10p you can write a message to go with it.

To send a candy cane to a deserving person find the house team in the concourse or at the stall in the downstairs reception!
