The S1 Modern Languages course introduces pupils to basic vocabulary and grammar through topics such as home and school. They also learn about French/Spanish speaking countries around the world. Pupils work towards understanding straightforward information in the foreign language through the four skills of talking, listening, reading and writing.
In S2 Modern Languages classes continue to increase their vocabulary and understanding of the foreign language through the four skills introduced in S1. Topics covered include family, home, daily routine and free time. Pupils will continue to learn more about French/Spanish speaking countries across the world and their many different cultures and customs.
The S3 course in Modern Languages builds on the languages skills acquired in S1 and S2. Pupils will extend their knowledge of the Francophone/Spanish speaking countries of the world; they will increase their range of vocabulary and tenses; and they will also read and explore more complex texts in the foreign language as well as more complex listening, writing and talking across a range of topics.
The aim of the S4 course is to offer progressive development of competence in the four skill areas of reading, listening, writing and talking in the foreign language within the 4 contexts of society, learning, employability and culture. In society they will cover topics such as family and friends, lifestyles, media, global languages and citizenship. In learning they will look at education and learning in context. In employability they will cover the world of work, and in culture they will cover topics including film, television, special events and the importance of learning another language.
The aim of the Higher/Advanced Higher course is to offer progressive development of competence in the four skill areas of listening, talking, reading and writing within a widening range of contexts and language purposes. Each course provides learners with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of detailed and complex language in the contexts of society, learning, employability and culture. The courses also prepare pupils for continued study of a Modern Language at college or university.
